Scuba diving Bali with Geko Dive in Padang Bai

Geko Dive Bali Logo Right 400px

Scuba diving Indonesia with Geko Dive Bali, Padang Bai's best PADI 5 star diver school: dive centre with beginner courses, safaris, packages, daytrips, excursions...

Over the years, the Geko Dive Team learnt what makes a great dive operation. Clean gas with good fills (210bar or change your tank), top-notch equipment, great facilities, own custom-made dive boats, respect for standards in diving, working with the best local and foreign dive guides and instructors, adaptability to divers’ needs and desires or care for the environment are but prerequisites.

While this is a good beginning, it is not enough! What is essential to the Geko Dive Team is that divers arrive as customers and leave as friends; then return as friends before departing as family. After all, spending great times together, both underwater and at the surface, is what diving is all about. This is why so many of our guests just keep on coming back and some decide to stay for good... And Bali is a great place to do just that!

Geko Dive Bali 20th Anniversary

Come celebrate 20 years of scuba diving excellence in East Bali's Padang Bai village

In 2017, Geko Dive Bali is celebrating its 20th anniversary since inception by Bob & Sue Jarvis. This scuba diving centre is Padang Bai's longest running dive operator. Since 1997, the same spirit of friendliness towards guests, support of the local community and a dedication to environmental protection animates the Geko Dive Bali team.

Be a part of diving history and join us for a celebratory Bali dive trip this season. Watch this space, along with our Facebook page, for special events and giveaways!

Padang Bai - The Best Dive Base in Bali

You may not have considered Padang Bai as a potential, let alone the best, dive base in Bali. Guide books, scuba diving magazines and traveller websites unequivocally send flocks of divers towards mass tourism areas of Bali devoid of any dive sites, such as Nusa Dua, Kuta, Seminyak and Sanur; or dive areas that only offer local diving like Tulamben, Amed and Nusa Lembongan. Then again, these same sources also direct the travelling herds to dynamited reefs on the other side of the Lombok Strait: the infamous Gili Islands!

Padang Bai has so much more to offer than most dive bases on Bali and beyond. Read on to learn why the Geko Dive Team believes the East Bali village of Padangbai is the best dive base of the Indonesian resort island...

Time spent off the bus is time well spent

Padang Bai's geographical location places it at an ideal position to minimise commutes to all the best dive sites of East and North Bali. Legendary dive sites like Blue Corner, Crystal Bay and Manta Point in Nusa Penida, the USAT Liberty shipwreck and the Drop-Off or Seraya in Tulamben, along with Candidasa's Gili islands of Biaha, Tepekong and Mimpang are all within one hour, and often much less, travel time from Geko Dive's Padang Bai base.

Geko Dive Bali's boats moor just 20 meters away from the Padang Bai diving school. When staying at a Padang Bai accommodation, divers can just walk to Geko's dive centre, check their gear in front of the diveshop and jump on the boat waiting on the beach accross the road. No bus, no car, no hassle: diving has just become stress-free. This suffices to help you forget last year's traffic jammed dive safari/one week bus tour around the island!

Hardcore muck divers can't get enough of the Jetty. Such macro lovers may not realise that the Geko Dive Team has some secret dive sites in Padang Bai up their sleeves ripe with rare critters. Many a divers' top of the bucket list includes rhinopias or frogfish

Manta rays, green turtles, reef sharks and pelagic fish are fairly easy to find. Try dive sites such as Penida's Manta Point and Gili Tepekong for big fish action in Bali. The Geko Dive Bali Team also recommends Padang Bai's Tanjung Sari, Shark Point and Ferry Channel for divers seeking thrill. Mola-mola sunfish also make their appearance in season at Gili Mimpang and Biaha close to Candidasa or Toyapakeh, Blue Corner and Crystal Bay not far from Nusa Lembongan.

Beginners will also enjoy the calm conditions that some Bali dive sites offer. The Geko Dive Bali Team just loves to meet new divers and spend quality time under water and at the surface. Return guests turned friends just keep on coming back. Some of these Geko family members even have plans to come and settle down in Padang Bai and make this great Bali dive base their permanent home. As some say, home is where the heart is!

What Others Say About Padang Bai

Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet Logo 120"Located on a perfect little bay, tiny Padangbai is the port for ferries between Bali and Lombok, and passenger boats to Nusa Penida. It is also a popular place to break a journey and relax while you plan your assault on Bali or Lombok (depending on which way you´re heading), and it´s a smaller, quieter, more beachy option than Candidasa. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from one end of town to the other. Take time to choose one of the many places to stay and eat; they´re all very close together."

Wikitravel

Wikitravel Newlogo 120"Most visitors to Padang Bai are there to catch a boat to Lombok. It is though a charming little place in its own right and many people cancel their trip in order to spend more time in this lovely village. Spending a night or two here will certainly not be time wasted."

"This is also a fairly convenient base from which to explore some of the wider attractions of East Bali."

"You do not really need any transport within Padang Bai as everything is within walking distance. If you want to explore the surrounding area, motorbike rental and car rental are widely available."

"The main beach is generally awash with colorful double outrigger fishing boats in the shape of a marlin. The front of the boat is shaped with the point of its mouth open wide and large eyes looking to the heavens. Either side of the main beach are two other hidden coves with nice, quiet white sand beaches."

Travelfish

Travelfish Logo 120"Padang Bai offers some stunning diving and snorkelling opportunities. Much of the diving is arranged through dive shops along the beachfront whereas snorkelling can be undertaken by simply walking to Blue Lagoon beach and renting the necessary gear from the beach vendor. Another beach to the west of town offers an even better beach experience and is virtually deserted aside from a few vendors who will make sure you don´t go hungry or thirsty."

Divezone

Dive Zone Logo 120"Scuba Diving in Padang Bai is one of the best around Bali. There are several very good diving sites just a few minutes away from the main beach. Most of them are perfect for beginners or for diving courses. But there are also more challenging diving sites with current and great chances to spot Reef Sharks, various Rays, Pelagic fishes and large schools of fishes!"

"It is a really sought after destination for macro lovers and underwater photographers! They will be delighted by wonderful night diving in the Blue Lagoon. They can find there leaf scorpion fish, ghost pipefish, pygmy sea horses, many rare nudibranchs, frogfish, the famous Spanish dancer and the very rare Cat Shark and Wobbegong sharks! And all that in shallow and calm water!".

Frommers

Link Frommers120x60 White"Fifteen minutes south of Candidasa is the little fishing village of Padangbai, with a beach aglow with the colors of wooden prahu boats. Simple fish restaurants and dive shops line the main road, while behind the village are dozens of small homestays and simple eateries. Just to the north is the perfect little Bloo Lagoon Beach."

Rough Guide

Rough Guide Logo 120"Deriving from two languages: padang is Balinese for grass and bai is Dutch for bay. PADANG BAI nestles in a white sand cove crowded with fishing boats. Laid-back village in a pretty bay; perfect for chilling out whether or not you are en route to Lombok."

One Stop Bali

One Stop Bali Logo"The majority of visitors choose to base themselves here purely for the excellent diving and snorkeling which is among the best in Bali. If it is peace and quiet you crave, nowhere is more relaxing with very little traffic in town and hawker-free golden sand to lie on.
